Not pictured is the nice looking piece of wood trim the carpenter unwittingly nailed into the pipe. The nail was simultaneously corking the hole it created in the pipe while slowly rusting away. This is like a time bomb. Once the tip of the nail rusts away there would have been a significant flow of water out of the hole and major damage would be caused by that. Luckily the issue was discovered before it was too late.
